George Taylor's steam powered vibrators were perhaps the first patented mechanical vibrating devices made to stimulate female patients. The first electromechanical vibrator was designed in 1880 by a British physician, Joseph Mortimer Granville. Although his model more closely resembled what we think of as a vibrator, Granville did not support the use of vibrating devices for inducing female orgasm. There were also applicators that would screw into the center disk. Marked Pat. applied for, Serial No. 6681. Could be from as early as the early 1880's or as late as about 1900. I imagine using this alone took a lot of concentration and dexterity.

OK! So what is the point of all these revelations? On the market are thousands of different vibrators with an amazing array of functions. So why do so many women own one? I believe that this is an empowerment issue. As woman sieze control of their lives; they want to control of all aspects of that life. I do not believe that any women wants to concede control of their orgasms to any partner. While the orgasm is a primal function of the human body; it is one of the few actual pleasurable primal functions. We all want control of our pleasurable experiences.
