Friends Versus Acquaintances; no it is not a new television game show. But we deal with the differences every day and in many cases the difference can be striking in your life.
What is a Friend? I like this definition very much: Friends are special people. If you are a friend, it means you were chosen. You are not in someone's life by happenstance, or by accident of birth. You're in someone's life because he or she wants you there.
By contrast Acquaintances are forced upon you by circumstance of proximity to your sphere of influence; like work. or the club you work out at or maybe some who likes to sit in the same area of an arena during a sporting event. For example; I have a particular area of a soccer stadium I enjoy sitting in for matches. I choose this area because it allows me to watch the defense of my favorite team. Defense is my favorite part of the match. At local matches there is this gentleman that sits in the same area for the same reason. So it is natural that we strike up a conversation. But by all accounts, and in other circumstances, I know this man to be someone I would not spend even one minute of time talking too. An acquaintance yes. A friend never.

I have many more acquaintance in my life than I have friends. I believe this is the case for most people. I am the type of person that keeps few friends for one simple and selfish reason. Friends complicate your life. And I love an uncomplicated life; if that is even possible. By nature if you let someone close enough to you to call them a friend then they will complicate your life because they are human. Conversely you will complicate their lives as well.

The thing about friends is that no matter what happens between friends; you can not just walk away from them. They are part of your life and you let them be part of your life. In some way you will always return to them as they will return to you. When it comes to acquaintances; you can just change your seat at the soccer stadium and voila acquaintances no more.

I have few friends in my life. Actually my number of friends in Second Life is greater than my Real life friends. I like it this way. But even in Second Life friends can complicate your life. It is the nature of the beast I guess. In the end they are your friends. You love them. You hate them. You can not live without them.
